These illustrations were done for CERE an NGO that had taken up a project to make english readers for the CBSE curicullum. They intended to make text books more interactive than the usual.

Counting Numbers

The brief for this project was to make a number book for an age group of 3 to 5 years. This book involves the child in learning numbers through more than one methods. Here the kid has to remove the stickers as shown in the photographs and stick in the void areas. Thus alongside reading the numbers the child also actually counts them.

This is a part of my final year diploma project that helps understand the Indian Calendraic System. The Indian Calendraic system is quite complex as compared to the Gregorian System. As a result increasingly fewer people are following it. Here is an attempt to simplify the system using visual tools. The panchang explains the concepts of the Indian Calendraic System verbally in the local languages, thus making it difficult for the newer generations to take interest in understanding the same.
An attempt to keep the Indian culture relevant to the younger generations.

There are some logos that happen in a jiffy, and some that will just refuse to pop up from their hiding places. No amout of research and understanding helps. Anyways. This is the logo designed for a friend who along with his batchmate has designed a brilliant product. I will not be able to do any justice to it by trying to explain. You should read about it on their blog. MTOS by the way stands for Multi-Touch Operating System.

final diploma jury

Remember my first post in october 2006? The one about my diploma jury? Well 10th August 2007 was the jury day. And from what the piece of paper shows above I have sailed through. :D Well it was a panel of 5 and not 4. But to put it in brief my final diploma was quite a success. I am still trying to get over the shock that I actually managed to get through the jury uninjured. As the external jury person I had Mr. Sudarshan Dheer on my panel, one of the very sucessful graphic designers of India.

I had a great time going back to NID after so long. Miss being by myself and yet amongst everybody. Mumbai just keeps getting more and more crowded and makes you more and more lost and lonely. Miss doing a lot of crazy things that I have done there.

This identity was developed for the International Centre for Indian Crafts, NID as part of the brand revamp program. I had taken up this project as a part of my 2nd class room specialization project at NID in the 4th semester.

The two interlocked elephants are nothing but two interlocking hands. Hands being the inevitable part of the handicrafts here also represent the stance that N.I.D. claims to take, that is joining hands and creating a network of institutes in areas of management, technology, social sciences, etc and making their expertise available to the rural artisans. The hands also denote the hand holding that N.I.D. will be doing for these artisans.
In the next post I have uploaded some of the brand applications developed for the program.

This was a logo which was in the process of being designed for an architectural firm called design scio. I was working on it for a friend. But for some reasons I had to terminate work on it. I came across this while I was looking for some other work in my aluminium trunk (which is what I call one of my hard disks btw). Scio apparently is a German word for shadow. What you see below are some explorations for the same logo.

Its been a real long time since my last post. I am glad there are a couple of regular visitors still staring at the old illustrations. If u guys are wondering where I am then I cud probably join the club coz I am myself trying to figure that out. Life’s been a bundle of mess lately. I am back in Mumbai, and Mumbai has never been more alien than this time. That extra freedom that I bragged about is far from over. I have taken up this job at Kemp’s corner at the design firm called Eureka Moment the graphic design sister concern of RJBX (architecture firm). The place is great and so are the people, but its my 5th day at work and my anxiety about the new place just refuses to die down. What is super amazing about this new life of mine is the travel!!!! Trust me I hate it. I take 4 trains, 2 buses, a ride of a km on my activa and an half an hour walk daily to and fro. And if you are wondering about by diploma project…well its not yet over L So after all the jazz about hoping and spiking over half of Mumbai, I come home to work on the designs of my diploma document. Well so much for self pity :D But Grant Road has some real interesting lanes that will find their way to my blog soon.

Ram Navami is celebrated on Shukla Paksha 9 (9th tithi of the bright half) of the lunar month of Chaitra. Chaitra occurs around the gregorian months of March-April. The festival is celebrated just around the 22nd of March which is the summer equinox. In other words, after this day the sun appears to be moving into the northern hemisphere.

Ram is said to be the descendant of the sun dynasty. The word Ram itself has associations with the sun as the syllable 'ra' in latin connotes 'light' (radiance, radium). If I am not wrong then Ram Navami is nothing but the worship of 'sun'.

The Hindu religion has given importance to just about every living form. Crows apparently have a very powerful vision. There is a strong belief that the crows can see the souls of people when they die. The belief probably came around because of the fact that they do have a strong vision. Well... just a guess!

The Hindu dedicate an entire fortnight for the dead. PITHRU PANDRAVDHA. In this fortnight, the favourite food of the one who is dead is prepared and kept in open spaces (roof tops) where crows can eat it. The crow eating the food signifies that the person who is dead has accepted the offering.

The life of a banyan tree is quite large. The tree has an unusual feature to produce adventitious roots from the branches. This characteristic of developing aerial roots allows a single tree to spread over a large area. Thus as much as the tree gets to spread itself, the longer the tree lives. Due to this property of the tree it has been symbolic of long life. On the poornima (full moon) of the Hindu month of Jeshtha (may-june of the gregorian calendar) married women tie a raw cotton thread around the tree seven times. Seven signifying all the seven lives of her husband. This is a part of the ritual in the prayers asking for the long lives of their husbands.

I have been challenged to keep my blog updated ('dedication is what it needs' I believe). Which means I cant wait for the LFW to begin. I have to upload something! Oops! cant afford to call this project 'something' now. This is one of my favourite projects at NID, where I have gone about understanding the semiotics of 'THE LOTUS'. In the process, I have had a lot of interesting insights about the flower. In this project I have tried to understand why lotus has been given such an important position in the Hindu mythology. I have tried to dig deep into the scientific reasons behind some of the very popular images in the Hindu mythology. I think 5 is limit to the number of images that I can upload at a time so I will upload a few more in the next post.

While I type this bit for my blog, my sweetest friend, Tejaswini Kulkarni and her boy friend, Rushabh Maniar are striving hard to set the ramp on fire in the Lakme Fashion Week 2006. They have been selected for the Gen Next section of the same. Cool eh!
So ‘I’ get to do their brochure! :D Well, most of the credit goes to the photographer who volunteered to do the shoot for us. 'Mr. Parag Savla' (parag@oogam.com 09820047780), who has done a brilliant job. Plus ofcourse the make-up man ‘Salim’, the model ‘Anna’ (http://www.supermodels4u.com) and all of those who were present at the shoot the other day, all have been a great help. Tejaswini and Rushabh wouldn’t have agreed more with me on anything else.
Well ‘I’ get to do the assembling bit, which is a cakewalk when everything else is already so aesthetically appealing. I do not have the permission to release the garment on my blog, which means I can't upload the jpgs of the brochure here yet, fair enough. The garments rather make a smashing entry on the ramp itself. So as of now I have uploaded their brand identity that I have designed for them and 'we' shall patiently wait for the brochure to be printed. :D

To pack a rucksack, travel to a destination by the cheapest modes of travel, look for sources that would give you authentic information about the place, and find something new, out of the textbooks! Stuff of my fantasies. Something I had craved to do all my college life. And here I am doing just that. This is my second blog on my Jaipur trip. Just explains how kicked I am about it.
I personally think that India as a country has a lot to teach and educational institutes should shut down. :D The money that we spend on schools and colleges should instead be spent on travel. I swear one would learn much more than one does within the four walls. The education system in India at least the one that I went through (I don’t belong to any gurukul) is very clerical in its approach. (or may be I should not comment over this)
Ever since I began my project, almost every other person who has understood what I am upto, wants to have a copy of my end product. And I thought my target audience had to be the younger generation. Oh I haven’t yet mentioned what I am up to on my blog, have I? Well vaguely, I am trying to understand the cultural anthropology w.r.t. the Indian festivals, largely in association with the Indian calendar (concentration being on Maharashtra). We as Indians are quite unaware of our origins and my diploma project is a very tiny attempt to understand, to where we belong.
Good that many are unaware, just gives my project better scope and me some much-needed motivation.

I just got back from a 2 day trip to Jaipur. As a part of my diploma project I had been there to document the "jantar mantar". And guys if you have the time and a little more than rs. 2000 (excluding your travel ticket fare), please go visit this place. It is an amazing mix for science and aesthetics. Some mind boggling calculations and crazy sense of scale, all to reflect the mysteries of the celestial sphere. It will be nice if you read up about these stone installments before you go there though, the guides seem to fleece you there.

pgpx recruitment brochure 2006

It was something like the movies, where the hero's idolling away on the beach and he gets this call from nowhere giving him this awesome project that changes his life. Ok may be this is getting too far! But it was something similar, just that I wasnt on the beach, it wasnt a phone call but a message and it hasnt made me a multi-millionaire yet, but the deal was good enough. To design the recruiment brochure for pgpx 2006, IIMA! Little did I know that this was just the begining of some great contacts, some much needed first hand experience and some great great bunch of friends! Inspite of having a work-ex of a year in a design firm back in mumbai, it was the first job that was handled completely. Right from dealing with the client to preparing concepts to designing and preparing print ready files. I worked on this project along with a good friend and junior at NID, Mugdha Kadam. This job gave me a walk-in on a couple of other freelance jobs at IIMA too. I would be bloging about them soon!

This illutration happens to be a part of the visual narrative assignment in class. In this project the class was supposed to make a visual representation of any thing that was a narration necessarily in a sequence. The subject of narration had to be in some way or the other related to the word "MATCH". What I chose to do was to represent visually, the song "matchbox" by the Beatles. What you can see here is just a part of the entire narration. This appears on my blog coz I think it very much represents my state of a nomad right now! Though the visual talks about someone who is sad, I think I am absolutely enjoying my nomadic life! The rest of my class of pg graphic design 2004 happens to be with the industry, Elephant design, Adobe, Rajesh Dahiya and such other. I chose to stay back! What on earth am I doing here?

I am making every attempt of keeping myself from getting lost in the extra freedom that I am enjoying these days. I have promised myself a whole semester of complete self expression and self discovery. Something that I believe will help me gain a much needed charater of myself as an independent graphic designer. These 6 months of which only 4 remain now, I plan to explore and exploit the realms of what I can do as a designer. Wether or not I can do path breaking stuff is a challenge that my faculty 'suresh' had given me at the time when I was selecting my diploma project, and is something that the end of this semester and a jury of 4 will tell!
